The Little Pepper’s Colorful Journey

The Warm-Loving Sprout

Deep in the warm, cozy soil, the growing process begins as a strong little green shoot breaks through the ground. It unfolds its very first leaves, soaking up the bright heat and stretching toward the summer sun (Jabbour, 2018).

Spreading the Branching Crown

As the plant grows taller, it builds a sturdy central stem that splits into a beautiful, Y-shaped crown of shiny green leaves. These leaves act like mini umbrellas, protecting the stem while deep roots anchor the plant firmly in the dirt (Jabbour, 2018).

White Star Blossoms

Soon, delicate white flowers shape like little stars begin to bloom all along the warm branches. These cheerful blossoms wave in the warm breeze, holding the secret beginning of the future peppers (Jabbour, 2018).

Tiny Green Caps

When the white flower petals gently fall away, they leave behind a tiny, bright green button. This little button grows quickly into a smooth, shiny green cap, hanging down safely from its sturdy branch (Jabbour, 2018).

Packing in the Vitamin C

The pepper drinks up the warm sunshine and grows bigger, plumper, and juicier every day. Inside its crunchy walls, it packs itself full of incredible amounts of Vitamin C—even more than an orange!—which helps our immune system stay strong and keeps our bodies safe from germs (Love Food Editors, 2016).

The Protective Shield

Deep within its expanding core, the pepper builds a healthy treasure chest of antioxidants and vitamins. These nutrients act like little internal shields, protecting our body’s cells and keeping our skin healthy and glowing (Love Food Editors, 2016).

Changing Color Outfits

Once the pepper reaches its full size, the true magic happens! It slowly stops being green and begins to change its outfit, trading its green coat for a brilliant, glowing red, orange, or yellow coat that tastes extra sweet (Jabbour, 2018).

The Crispy Snap!

When the pepper is bright, smooth, firm, and fully colored, it is ready to pick! With a gentle lift and a clean, crispy snap of the stem, the sweet pepper is harvested from the branch, ready to be enjoyed as a colorful, healthy treat (Jabbour, 2018).

Historical facts ;
Peppers began in the Americas, where wild pepper plants grew long before people planted gardens. Indigenous communities grew and shared peppers across many regions, selecting plants with different colors, shapes, sizes, and flavors. After peppers traveled to Europe in the 1500s, they spread quickly around the world. Today, peppers can be sweet, mild, or spicy, and can be green, yellow, orange, red, or purple.
